Nearly eight years after the passage of the Transportation Safety Enhancement, Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has made a portion of the data from its Early Warning Reporting (EWR) system available to the public.
The obtainable EWR data reveal some of the detailed information about claims of deaths, injuries, and property damage that have been known by manufacturers of motor vehicles and vehicle equipment but kept secret by NHTSA since 2003. Production data are also available by make, model, model year, and platform.
At the present time, the data are only directly accessible from NHTSA in a form that is both incomplete and very difficult for non-specialists to compile and analyze. To make the available data simpler to use, we have organized them into SAS, Excel, JMP, and ASCII datasets.
Contact us for information on obtaining these datasets.
We also compile tracking reports of emerging safety and performance issues of importance to consumers, manufacturers, suppliers, and regulators based on these and related data. Currently available summary reports include:
Statistical Rankings of Injury Claims (See Injury Prevention, April 2004, 10:88-92, by R.A. Whitfield and Alice K. Whitfield.)
Volume of Early Warning Reporting Claims of Deaths and Injuries by Quarter
Early Warning Reporting Claims of Deaths and Injuries by Manufacturer by Quarter
Median Time in Days from Death or Injury Incident to Closing Date of Reporting Quarter by Report Year by Manufacturer
These reports, as well as additional custom reports you may require, are available on request.
